INDIA - MAURITIUS RELATIONS
In recent years, India has stepped up its engagement with Africa. Mauritius is an important partner among the indian ocean littoral countries in the region and its relationship with the island country's very significant for India.
India and Mauritius connected by shared history and connections between India and Mauritius date back to 1730. The diplomatic relations were established in 1948. Also almost 68% of the population of the country. is of Indian origin.
HEALTH
COOPERATION
• India handed over a consignment of llakh doses of Made in India COVID -19 vaccines to Mauritus.
• India supplied 23 tonnes of essential medicines, half a million of tablets of hydrochloroquine, as well as a consignment of Ayurvedic Medicines.
DEFENCE & SECURITY COOPERATION
India transfer a Dornier Aircraft and an Advance Light helicopter Dhruv on lease to Mauritus.
India has extended support to Mauritius in enhancing its coastal survilleance capabilities by setting up the Coastal Survilleance Radar System (CSRS) in 2011.
India's defence cooperation with Mauritius benefits both countries. The CSRS network enhancing the country's Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) in the Indian Ocean region.
ECONOMY
India is Mauritius's largest trading partner and has been the largest exporter of good and services to the Indian ocean Island nation since 2007.
India could also contribute to the evolution of Mauritius as a regional centre for technological
innovation.
Mauritius could also become a valuable place for regional and internaitonal maritime scientific reserach.
TRADE PACT
A watershed free trade pact, the 'Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement' (CECPA) was signed during the MEA visit.
This is the first kind aggrement that India has signed with any country in Africa.
